School Resolutions Campaign
What is the School Resolutions Campaign?
The School Resolutions Campaign is part of the CA Youth Vs Big Oil strategy to organize youth climate activists and raise our voices to call on Governor Newsom to tackle the climate crisis. He needs to ramp up the pace by committing to no new permits, accelerating the phase out of fossil fuel production on a timeline aligned with climate science, and strengthening 3200 ft setbacks to apply to new and existing wells.
We are building youth power around these demands by creating opportunities for organizing around local targets to put pressure on the governor. Getting our schools, college campuses, and school districts across the state to endorse resolutions supporting our demands for Governor Newsom is one effective way to do so.
Resolutions are often used as a campaigning tool to demonstrate widespread support or opposition on an issue, broadcast demands, and get the attention of decision-makers. This is because passing resolutions through institutions that represent us demonstrate our collective agreement and show the power behind our demands.
Strategy
We mobilize young people to target school boards, student governments, and university campuses to adopt resolutions calling on Newsom to act on our Stop, Drop, and Roll demands. As institutional bodies that represent young people, student governments and school boards can amplify the moral clarity youth bring to addressing the climate crisis. By targeting institutions where youth have influence and are more closely connected, we hope to create ways for youth to take action and build pressure on Governor Newsom at the local level.
The School Resolutions Campaign builds on the success of and works in close coordination with youth leaders with Youth 4 Climate 350 who have successfully targeted the San Diego County Board of Education to pass a resolution at San Diego Unified School District calling on the Governor to act on these demands. CA Youth Vs Big Oil coordinators passed similar resolutions at UC Berkeley and Sweetwater Unified High School District.
Goals
Intensify and amplify localized youth pressure on Newsom by passing resolutions through bodies that represent students and young people, such as school districts and university campuses.
Create on-ramps for broader youth participation in campaigning on Newsom around Stop, Drop, and Roll policy demands.
Empower and develop youth leadership over the course of these campaigns.
